A DESPERATE ENCOUNTER

SYDNEY, This Day.
When the police got into telephonic communication with Major Labarte after the shooting of his wife, the only information he would give them was: "I've gone over the line," H'repeated this several times. When the police first arrived they searched the house, but failed-to find Labarte, who oh th e second visit shot Constable Mitchell.,. An exchange of shots was maintained till Labarte's ammunition was exhausted. Five revolvers, a riflle and a shotgun were found in the house. Labarte is a son of Canon Labarte of Melbourne, and was highly popular. He won the M.C. at the war. His wife was a daughter of a prominent Melbourne lawyer. They lived on affectionate terms. The only explanation of theceri e is dementia, —A.'and N.Z.
