Interesting history of early settlement days in the Far North is associated with the career of the late Mr. John Daly Hayes, more popularly known as Captain Hayes, who was killed at Mount Eden railway station recently when attempting to cross the line. The deceased gentleman was bom at Whangaroa 89 years ago and was closely connected with the whaling industry which was a feature of the period. As the owner of bush lands he cut timber from the area and carried on a considerable trade in that commodity with Auckland, using a schooner of his own for the purpose. The homestead which he occupied still stands in prominent view at the Whangaroa harbour entrance. The late Mr. R. J. Seddon was counted among Mr. Hayes' many friends in the days long gone by. For some years past Mr. Hayes had resided in the Mount Eden district, Auckland, and is survived by Mrs. Hayes and eight married children.
