CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

MONTHLY MEETING

The monthly meeting of the Whangarei Chamber of Commerce was hold in Mr Harris' rooms last evening. Present —Messrs A. M. McLeod (president), in the chair, E. G. W. Tibbits, F. W. Reed, A. R, Crane, R. G. Hosking, J. A. Finlayson and H. W. McKenzie. The meeting was one of the shortest on record, as none of the members had any new business to bring forward. DEPUTY-OFFICIAL ASSIGNEE. In connection with the appointment of a successor to Mr A. R. Crane as assignee the Minister of Internal Affairs asked the Chamber to forward particulars in support of his nomination. MAIN NORTH ROAD. A conference will take place in reference to the Main North road on November 4 and the Chamber decided to be represented in the interests of the district to see that no undue influence was brought to bear to have the route diverted from the most direct and advantageous line. Mr McKenzie said that he saw no reason why all the Northern local authorities should not combine in getting the main road decided upon from Auckland to Maungaturoto for a start. That road had been neglected by the local authorities directly affected and a remedy was required. There was little room left for quibbling in getting the arterial road decided upon as far north as Maungaturoto. From that point there were well-graded roads to both the Northern Wairoa and Whangarei, the latter via Waipu despite the Waipu Gorge which was much better than it used to be. When the railway question was under review it had been tacitly agred that it should go unhampered to as far as McCarroll 's Gap, and Mr McKenzie thought that, although the compact on that occasion was not strictly observed, the interested districts should let .the road go to Maungaturoto from Auckland without dispute. Mr McKenzie further affirmed that his experience at Taheke and other points in the North was that the settlers desired to get roads to their own centres first before supporting any arterial highway. However, those were problems for the future and at the present juncture he would favour furtherance of the Auckland to Maungaturoto link as the first section. After the president had declined to act on the special committee nominated, Mr Crane moved that Messrs McKenzie, Tibbits and Murdoch bo delegated from the Chamber to meet othjer representatives at the forthcoming conference, and the committee so constituted was set upj ** PARCELS DELIVERY. In reply to the Chamber's request concerning institution of a parcels delivery in the, business area of Whangarei the P.O. Department had intimated that the quantity of parcels dealt with in Whangarei fell far short of requirements necessary to demand delivery service. Members stated that they were not at all satisfied with the reply and the Department will be asked to state how many parcels it considers necessary before the institution of a parcels delivery can be sought with prospects of compliance. QUICK DISPATCH. . All the above business was connected with inward correspondence and as there were'no new. subjects to bring forward the meeting terminated within half an hour of its opening.
