PROVINCIAL CONFERENCE

IN WHANGAEEE

A conference of the Auckland Provincial District Branch of the New Zealand Society of Civil Engineers will take place in the Whangarei Town Hall supper-room ou Saturday evening.

In connection, with the conference it is expected that over 30 engineers will spend the week-end in. this district and consequently it has been arranged that the visitors shall be permitted an opportunity of inspecting some of the chief engineering works in the neighbourhood during their brief sojourn.

On Saturday morning, at 9 o'clock, the visitors will be welcomed by the Mayor (Mr. J. S. Dent), and they will then bo conducted to the borough waterworks at Maunu, proceeding thence to the Wairua Falls and the hydro-electric station. After the works there have been, inspected the party will have luncheon at Poroti and will then be conveyed to Hikurangi, where they will inspect the Hikurangi coal mine and lime works, returning to Whangarei for dinner, prior to the general meeting in the supper-room at 7.30 p.m.

On Sunday the visitors will make a' trip down the harbour in the Harbour Board's launch.

At 9 a.m. on Monday the party will proceed to Oakleigh, where a special train *will be taken to Waiotira to view the railway construction works, arriving back at Portland for luncheon as guests of the Wilson Portland Cement Company, whose works will afterwards be inspected. The visitors will return to Auckland on Tuesday.

In addition to the ordinary business the order paper for the general meeting indicates that consideration will be given to the petition proposed to be presented at the forthcoming annual general meeting of the society at Christchurch. with reference to a Chair of Engineering being established at Auckland University College.

Mr. Bush will move "That this branch is of opinion that the council should take immediate steps to define suitable areas as branch districts and generally formulate a definite policy for the establishment of district branches throughout the Dominion."

Three papers will be read and discussed —"A description of works proposed by the Whangarei Harbour Board," by Mr. W. M. Fraser; "Sewer Ventilation," by Mr. J. Darlington Whitmore; and "Reinforced Concrete Wharf Extension at Portland," by Mr. F. E. Powell, all of which will be of general interest locally. The Mayor has been thanked -by the executtive for the grant of the use of the supper-room and has been invited to attend the various trips arranged.
