An area of land of approximately 1000 acres, containing standing timber, has been set aside in Westfield as a State forest reserve. The land in question has" a frontage to the Hokitika river.
A Napier paper says that most of the suitable willows growing on the Hawke's Bay rivers' banks are to be used for the manufacture of artificial limbs. The trees concerned have been inspected and approved, and they will b e removed as soon as possible.
On a station in the Mohaka (Hawke's Bay) district, lately, some Maori scrub-cutters struck because they could not be supplied with white sugar. Brown sugar was refused by them, notwithstanding that the owner explained that h e had to use brown sugar himself. The result was that th c Maoris were paid off.
Referring tp previous visits of* New Zealand rifle teams to Australia, Colonel Collins said at the recent "senxhoff" to th e New Zealand team: "In addition to the sending of rifle teams to Australia in the years 1907 and 1909 to compete in the Empire match, a New Zealand team was gent in 1873 for the intercolonial match at Melbourne, which was won by New South Wales, Victoria second, New Zealand third. In 1888 a team was sent to take part in the Centennial match, held at Melbourne. New Zealand scored a victory here over an Australian team of volunteers. New Zealand was again represented at the inter-Colonial match at Sydney in 1892, won by New Zealand coming third.. In 1901 a New Zealand riflg team took part in the inaugural rifle meeting, which took place at Sydney to commemorate the inauguration, of the Austral-J ian Commonwealth." " . ■
