Mr H. A. Morey, formerly of Parua Bay. is at pi'esent on a visit to Whangarei to see his two daughters, .both of whom are in hospital. Mr W. H. Moon, of Avondale School, has been appointed secretary *>f the Auckland branch of the New Zealand Educational Institute. Mr W. M. Fraser, engineer to the Whangarei Harbour Board returned to-day from Auckland, where he has 'been laid up by sickness for some days. Mr E. K. Mulgan, Senior Inspector of Schools at Auckland, is seriously ill. On Saturday th e Auckland branch of the New Zealand Educational Institute passed a motion of sympathy and hope for his speedy .recovery.

M. Leygues, who has accepted the French Premiership in succession to M. Millerand, the latter having been elected President, is 63 years of age, A graduate of the Institute, he entered political lif e very early. He /was elected deputy by the Department of Lot-et-Garonne in 1884. and has been continously re-elected by the same district. He held the post of Minister for Public Instruction in the Dupuy Cabinet (1894), Minister for the Interior in the first Ribot Cabinet (1895) again Minister for Public Instruction in the second (Dupuy Cabinet (1898), and shortly iafterwards in the Waldeck-Rousseau Ministry. In 1906 he was Minister for Colonies in the Serrien Cabinet. M. Leygues joined M. Clemenceau's 'Cabinet in November, 1917, as Minister for Marine, and he retained this iportfolio when M. Millerand succeeded M. Clemenceau in the Premiership in January last.
