Two additional trawlers are being added to the Auckland fleet and will be chiefly engaged in prospecting the grounds along both coasts of the Northern peninsula.
In the midst of the commotion at the conclusion of the murder trial yesterday th e Clerk of the Court, Mr F. Bird, was urgently requisitioned to conduct a wedding the contracting parties, who were from the Poroti district, having waited more or less patiently for some hours.
There was a very good attendance at the Tinopai Ladies' Hockey Club dance in the Parochial Hall last evening, in spite of the counter attractions, and the event was in every way a repetition of the standard of success attained by the previous one promoted by members of the club.
With an attendance of approximately 500 at the Presbyterian Soiree last evening the ground floor of the Town Hall was well filled. The occasion was one of the most successful held in Whangarei for a long time past, and a further report upon the general programme rendered will be published to-morrow.
At Invercargill last week a man was charged with following his usual occupation as a carrier on Sunday, June 5. * A constable gave evidence that he had seen the defendant carting furniture on the Sunday in question. The defendant pleaded ignorance of the law, and produced a copy of the carriers award, in which it was set forth that for Sunday work double pay should be received. The Magistrate stated that he could do what other work he liked on Sunday, 'but must not follow his own trade. A fine of 5s was im-
posed,
Notification was sent to th e Farmers' Union sub-provincial executive yesterday that the Hukerenui branch had seceded from the sub-provincial body and would, in future, send its remits direct to Auckland. The president, Mr G. S. B. Morrison, was deputed to visit the branch to ascertain what was wrong. It was decided to express regret to Hukerenui branch that on e of its remits to be forwarded to the Conference had been overlooked and to itell them that the president had endeavoured personally to-have it submitted, but had been unable to do so.
Arrangements were made- at a well-attended meeting of the Whangarei Rugby Union management committee last evening for a conference of delegates from the several North Auckland Rugby Unions to take plac e in Whangarei for the purpose of getting the Northland Rugby Union started. So far the delegates due to attend are Messrs L. J. Brake and R. Worner (Whangarei), A. E. Harding and J. Stewart (Northern Wairoa), and W. Smith and S. Maioha (Bay of Islands). Mr W. "I do not propose to press any further argument that may be brought on the economic aspect," sad Mr W. C. McGregor, KjC, when dealing wj.th the ©.I.C. profiteering charges in the Magistrate's Court at Chrlistchurch. "The result in the previous cases was rather disastrous. Immediately the economic argument started, the densest fog ever known in Canterbury settled down upon Chritschurch. I have no wish for a recurrence. I understand that the cause of the fog was that one of of the court room windows was inadvertently left open during Sii' John Findlay's address."
Expressions used by some members of the Farmers' Union executiv e indicate that the farmers' representatives do not hold very complimentary opinions concerning the readiness of members of the farming fraternity to "pay up." Mr Cubitt, who has succeeded fairly well in collecting membership fees in the Waikiekie district often expressed dissatisfaction at the number of fees outstanding, and difficulty in getting them in. Criticising the proposal to appoint a travelling secretary, Mr Jounneaux remarked: "If your organiser went round to see farmers, he would' not know where they were, but if the farmers knew where he was they would take jolly good care to be out when h e did arrive.' .
