BEYOND ANTICIPATION.

The London wool sales opened very weak. Prices showed a decline of 5 ,tp 20 per cent., compared with the (Closing rates at the last London sales. Half the offerings were with-
drawn,
Following recent declines at the London provincial and Antwerp wool sales, the trade generally expected that the current sales would open at Ipwer rates, but extent of the decline exceeded all anticipations. Tho numiber of bales offered was 11,620, of which 2,707 were from New Zealand. The'selection was fairly representative, and there-was a large attendance, but biddings were very slack. Yorkshiremen would not buy Merinos, and Continental buyers operated sparingly in them at an allround decilne of 15 to 20 per cent. .Fine crossbreds met with slow biddings at a 10 to 15 per cent, decline. Medium and lower grades found better support at about a 5 per cent, decline. New Zealand Struan clip realised 41d, Langollen 561 d, and Hawthorne lambs 35d.—A. and N.Z.
