GREATEST IN HISTORY.
AUSSIES' FIGHTING CALIBRE. —— _ WARM BRITISH TRIBUTE. | (Received 8 a.m.) ! LONDON, Feb. 9. The "Manchester Guardian," in a leader on General Monash's book, pays a warm tribute to General Monash's resource and brilliant leadership, but mildly protests against the reference to the British Third Corps of Infantry failing to reach their ultimate objective, which he indirectly suggests was due to faulty staff combination or faulty local leadership.
The correct explanation is that the 1 bird Corps, northward of the Somme, had most difficult ground to cover. The absence of recognition of this difference is an instance of the few failings in their judgment of others by the wonderful Australian troops. With -the exception of a few isolated units, they are the greatest of all modern soldiers, probably the greatest in all iistory. They aro so supreme in every other martial quality that they could well afford to practice complete generosity in their judgment of their comrades.—A. and X.Z.
