SATURDAY HALF-HOLIDAY.
In connection with other communities Whangarei has been considering the question of adopting a Saturday halfholiday. There is a good deal of feeling in favour of the change but nothing sufficiently definite has been expressed to warrant the Borough Council taking action. The meeting called for this evening to go into the question of forming a association should nr'l'ord an excellent opportunity for discussion. To make any alteration advisable it is first necessary to ascertain the wish of the majority of the business people. "While some favour the weekt nil break others hold the opinion that ii would have :i serious affect upon trade and ;;lso cause inconvenience to country customers who prefer (Saturday for shopping purposes. The other contention is that the mid-week break does
not confer the advantage of a clear
cessation of work from Saturday to
Monday morning. The holiday for tho shops and offices and factories is also
separated, which, it is pointed out
prevents general enjoyment. With one day for all classes of employers and uuployeos it is halt! that irado could be carried on much more smoothly and the workers given tho maximum relief from toil. If gireu v lead by tho business people there should be little doubt as to the community coming to a decision on the matter. The Borough Council has taken no stops with regard to fixing the holiday this year and there are no legal difficulties in Iho way of an alter at ion if desired.
