ATHLETICS
AUSTRALASIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS.
N.S. WALES WIN SHIELD
NEW ZEALAND SECOND
(Received 8.0 a.m.) SYDNEY i Feb. 7. Ideal weather favoured the concluding stages of the athletic championships, Friday's rain giving place to a bright, crisp day. The tracks were in perfect condition. The keenness of last week's competitions and the evenness of the contest between New Zealand and New South Wales excited intense interest. To-day's events brought together a record crowd. As anticipated New Zealand's champion hammer-thrower, McHolm, easily out-distanced the local talent, beating the wonderful shotputter by a good margin. Lindsay who had already beaten the great Englishman, over 220 yards, had to content himself with third place behind the New South Wales fliers, Hunt and Leadley. The manner in which Hunt shaped in the 100 and 220 yards has caused his name to be seriously considered in connection with the Olympic Games. Dormer made a good showing in the 880 yards, being narrowly beaten by the N&w South Wales representative, Piggott, who usually shmes over the last stages of the half mile > where as Dormer appears to have lost his dash at the finish. New South Wales occupied the three places in the mile walk. Parker repeated his victory obtained last week in the three miles' walk, easily downing Austin by sixty yards. New Zealand was not represented { in the running high jump and the three miles' run, the former going to Victoria, H. W. Harbison topping sft gin against the New South Wales competitor's sft sin.. New South Wales again suppled the leaders in the three mles , run, Grandemange scoring easily. The final points were as under: — First Second Third N.S. Wales .... 7 9 Jj New Zealand .. 4 5 a Victoria 4 } ? , The other competing States failed to obtain a place.—A- and N.Z.
