NORTH AUCKLAND RAILWAYS.
MAIN TRUNK DISPUTE,
AT HUARAU TUNNEL,
AUCKLAND, Feb. 7.
The men employed at the Huarau tunnel on the northern trunk railway have asked the Aucklaad Bail ways League to support their request for higher wages. The letter states that the housing problem "still remains the "same." Twelve shillings a day is paid for outside and 14s a day for inside work, and it was affirmed that if an improvement was not made immediately there would not be sufficient men left to complete the tunnel. The last time the tunnel closed, 78 shores were necessary to reepen the works, and it would require more dead work if the tunnel is closed now. The claims of the men are generally supported by the league in a letter to the Primo Minister. "The wages paid lo first-class miners working in sucli slippery country demands investigation," states the letter, which adds thnmany men arc dsmaudma higher pay for ordinary outside pick and shovel work. —Press.
