ANZAC MEMORIAL.

(To the Editor). Sir, —Could you please tell me what has been done in this town re an Aiizac Memorial, or some other form of appreciation of those who have never returned? The men all received a hearty send-off, but I have not heard of any welcome home to the fortunate ones who have been spared to return. Looks like justifying Kipling's poem about the brief duration of the soldier's glory. However, surely we must not forget "the blood of heroes, the seeds of liberty , ' that lie on the various battlefields.- - I am, etc., ANZAC.

(W<- regret to have to state that so far nothing in the nature of a memorial to the honoured dead has beea contemplated in Whangarei. The subject has frequently been introduced in our columns, both by correspondents and ourselves, but, as stated .above, nothing of a general memorial has been given public consideration. We ourselves are inclined to the opinion that a splendid up-to-date boy* , • secondary school, including a completely equipped technical schooJ, I , would be quite as appropriate, if not 'more so, than anything else. Such a school would be open for all time to North Aucklanders and their descendants. Imagine the pride of the boys in years to come, when the names of their fathers and grandfathers, etc., are read out from the Honours Roll at (say) the opening ceremony of the first term each year. Would the names of those men ever be forgotten with such a ceremony to keep ihem green, This is our opinion. Others have different id ©as, but so far no public meeting has be 3 r l called to discuss the subject.—Ed N.A.)
