FLAX CARGO FIRE!.
AN UNLUCKY STEAMER
AUCKLAND, Jan. 19,
The Northern Company's steamer Gael, now lying at the King's wharf, was the scene of a flax fire again last, evening. The vessel had arrived from the Piako Kiver during the day with a full cargo of flax, which in addition to filling the hold occupied a portion of the deck. About 7.30 p.m. smoke was seen issuing from the hfteh, but the iire brigade arrived almost immediately, and prevented the firo from reaching dangerous dimensions.
It was necessary to throw one bale of flax already afire into Iho harbour, hut the bales which were smouldering wore.prevented from breaking out into flames. More than a dozen bales were charred, hut the only daimige received by the steamer was that from a slight burning of the after bulkhead, near which the lire started.
Tt will be remembered that a. similar lire occurred upon this steamer little more than a month ago, while she was loading in the Piako Rivei. On. that occasion, however, more damage was done, several bales being burnt, ans the lining of the hold and the hatches being considerably injured.—Press Assn
