BIG BLAZE.

GRAIN ELEVATOR DESTROYED.

OAMARU, This Day.

Messrs P. and T. Meek's five-storey grain elevator was almost totally destroyed by fire early this morning. The outbreak was first observed at five o'clock. Th e flames then had a strong hold, which the brigade, despite heroic efforts, failed to subdue.

The Westport Coal Company's wood yard on th c windward side escaped with little damage, save from falling walls, but the wall at the rear, fpll on the railway repair shop, smashing a portion flat. The front and side walls are still partially

standing but are liable to fall at time. A large quantity of grain and woolpacks were destroyed. The origin of the fire, which started in the upper part of the building, is a mystery. Insurances are unavailable.—Press Assn.
