LOCAL AND GENERAL.

As an ilustration of the risingprice of land in the North, it may be mentioned that a farmer who nine nionths ago purchased a property of 54 acres at Waikaraka for £2000 has just sold it for £3000, or at the "rat* of £55 11s per acre.

The sußper-room Hand sale of yesterday, dealing with .the late Edward Dent's estate, proved to be no sale at all. The commonly expressed opinion was that the reserve .prices were too high, and that the terms of the sale were not sufficiently accommodating.

Kensington Park promises to be exceedingly popular in the near future. Quite a number of sport and recreative bodies are to be accommodated, and an enterprising policy of preparing th c ground is already at work. Protection from sun and rain is proposed, and trees and shelters are included in the objects in view.

Few men in the present generation have ever witnessed the native custom of eating raw fish. With the advancing influence of civilisation the Maori has learned the taste for cooked food, but one native yesterday revived to the old custom. He bought a 31b schnapper and taking it into the alley-way at McMahon's hotel ate it raw in the presence of a number of spectators. The man was quite sober and explained that he had been taught .by his mother that i t was best to eat his fish raw.

It would seem ag though the way is now clear for Kensington Park to take upon itself an aspect more true to itself as a "park." A commonsense laying-out of the ground has been projected, and local beautification are revelling in the prospects of dainty flower beds, pretty side-walks, restful shade, live and beautiful hedges, avenues, and clumps of trees, and other combinations of community spirit, knowledge and social service.
