TRAMWAY EMPLOYEES.
EXTENDED AWARD PROPOSAL,
AUCKLAND, Jan. 8. The position of the Auckland City Council and its tramway employees in reflation to the movement to obtain a Dominion tramway award is explained by the Mayor (Mr J. H. Gunson), for the guidance of the public.
Actually the Auckland Council has no dispute with its employees whatsoever at the present tim e - The agreement entered into last year, statd the Mayor, does not expire untifl May next, and there is every reason t(> believe that its terms will be respe/ctf'd by the men. The Council, in response t fl th.o advances of the Southern municipalities,, was represented at the. recent conference called for the purpose of considering the framing of a Dominion award, which would, of course, supersede Uocal awards if it were arrived at. The Council was'favourable to a Dominion award, and its delegates endorsed that principle. Nothing has arisen to change the attitude of the Council in this respect. The conference, however, preyed abortive, points out the Ma/or, and therefore the position now is that unless something further develops in connection with the Dominion proposals it will automatically follow that somewhere about May, when th« present 'local agreement expires a superseding agreement will be negotiated ftjy. When tlv time arrived the Council would £\ive its best consideration to 'this,
