MATAPOURI.
On Friday evening last the returned soldiers treated the settlers to a social and dance. There was a great crowd and everyone enjoyed themselves. Mr Pahihi, of Whananaki, supplied some excellent music. At the unveiling of the Whananaki roll of honour on Tuesday last Mr Vernon Reed, M.P., delivered a short address. He declared that ever since the Franco-Prussian war, Germany had been preparing for a conquest of the world, and but for the help of the men whose names were on the roll of honour she might have won.-i And if she had by any chance been victorious, then New Zealand would. ihave no longer have been a fit place to live in. He then called upon Mr H. A. Halvorsen, who was assisted by Messrs E. Symmans and E. Macken, to unveil the roll of honour. Mr J. P. Mclnnes, county chairman, who was received with applause, also said a few words. He said that on the roll of honour were the names of some of the be-st and bravest men who had*' , gone to beat a savage and cruel foe, bent on trampling the nations of the earth under foot. He asked the children to remember that, though they were children to-day, they were destined to be the men and women of to-morrow, and but for those brave men whose names were inscribed on the roll of honour they would have been under the heel of militarism for the rest of their lives. The roll contained some 36 names, some of whom had made the supreme sacrifice, and fourteen had received wounds. After the ceremony the children all gathered round a delightful Christmas Tree drooping with toys, etc., and had the time of their | lives. !-
