RURAL MAIL DELIVERY.

PROTEST AGAINST REGULATIONS.

Dissatisfaction with the local rural mail delivery service has been expressed by many of those whom it serves. The crux of the complaint is the intimation given by the postal authorities that in future, in accordance with regulations, rural delivery box-holders will not receive their letters other than through that delivery. Many country residents have been in the habit of asking for their letters across the counter of the Whangarei Post Office on days during the interval between regular deliveries to the boxes, and the enforcement of the regulations will terminate thi s convenience. There are occasions when country residents visiting the town desire their mail for the furtherance of business, and their contention is that they should b e permitted to obtain their letters whenever opportunity occurs. It is also held that the rural delivery was not instituted tossa c postal officials work, but as a convenience to people living too far away to he served hy the ordinary methods of mail distribution. Several of the complainants have declared that unless they can avail themselves of the counter delivery they will abandon the rural boxes, and will arrange for their mail to be delivered to them upon application; a cours c which certainly would add to the work of the postal officials.
