"DAN" AGAIN.
KAMO'S GREAT ATHLETE,
CREATES SCOTTISH RECORD
GIVING TEN YARDS IN
This is What the Manchester "Athletic News" of Augwrt 11th last, ha s to say about it:— A somewhat unique chapter in the history of Scottish athletics was written at Celtic Park, Glasgow, on Saturday. Excellent weaker conditions prevailed, and everything betokened the fast times which were eventually shown. Forty-three runners went to their respective marks in the open mile, among whom were A. G. Hill, Polytechnic H., and W. B. Ross, Edinburgh Northern H., the latter the best of the Scotsmen over the distance thig year. The race early developed into a tense struggle between the pair with an outsider, A. Heggerty, an unattached runner, making all the pace. A. G. Hill was unable to overtake the "dark horse," but foe had the satisfaction of making a new record for Scotland with the remarkably fine time of 4min 16 4-ssec, thus beating F. E. Bacon's 4min. 18 4-ssec f made at the Edinburgh Northern Harriers' meeting in 1894. W. B. Ross, the Scottish champion, was third quite close up. But more of the same quality of sport falls to be recorded. In the Half-Mile Invitation Handicap, Sergeant D. L. Mason, New Zealand Forces, eschewing the ten yards concession given him by the handicapper went off from the scratch mark with the best of the S. Tonall, Bellahouston H., and W. B. Ross. The soldier quickly gathered his field,, and, by excellent judgment, husbanded his resources for the final burst in which he was aided,. by the Scottish runners. By a couple of feet or so he dashed home in lmin. 55 2-ssec—2-5 of a second inside the all-comers' Scottish record of the American, Homer made in 1914.
But if Mason had accepted the ten yards' start? On the average pace recorded in the above it means that he could have broken the record by about *8 second!
