THE POLITICAL ARENA.

AtAIWDEN SEAT,

MJi Mu LEAN AT KAMO. Mr D. A. .McLean addressed a small but appreciative audience at Kamo last night. The chair was occupied by Mr T. Griffin (chairman of the Tow-u Hoard) and he declared that it was a healthy sign to see a locally born man oil'ering his services to the electors. Mr McLean covered a number of subjects in his platform and at the conclusion was accorded a hearty vote of thanks on the motion of Mr J. A. S. McKay, seconded by Mr M. Mclnnes. The mo tion was carried with applause. Mr McLean expressed tiie opinion that the Second Ballot should never have been done away with, unless pro portional voting had been provided for Ho declared himself in favour of n bachelor tax and a maternity bonus. The candidate also asserted that if the producers of the country —the waooeavners and the farmers—got together in conference, it would result in a very much better understanding of the industrial position. "What we want," said Mr McLean, "is a more equal distribution of wealth." While it might be impossible to attain that ideal exactly, a ne-.ir approach to it could be secured by equitable application of the incomt tax. Eighty per cent, of the people were producers, yet they were coatrolled by capitalists. The Labour platform, on the whole, he contended was the best and most democratic yet brought before the people. Sir Joseph Ward had practically adopted it, and if it were brought into operation by evolution it would benefit the couatry.
