GIANT FULTON A WINNER.

The preliminary to the McGoortyBeckett aJl'air was a match between the American ex-plasterer pugilist, Fred Pillion, a giant (it't 4Jin high, and Arthur Townley, who practically knocked out Australian Harold Hardwick in 12 rounds in the contest preceding the Bec-kett-Frank Goddard rough-up on June 17 last. Fulton, the cableinan says, knocked Townley out in the first round. Townley was rated a heavyweight chockful of promise. Fulton wont to England months back with the avowed intention of endeavouring lo retrieve his reputation, and so qualifv;,i;r tor another match with the present heavyweight champion of the world, Jack Dempster.

Kef erring to possibilities for Dempsey in Europe, Walter .St. Denis, of \ew York wrote last month:"There

is, however, another man over there who might upset all the dope, if he gets the chance. That one is an American —Fred Fulton, he is—and it may be that either Beckett or Carpentier will agree to a match with him while negotiations are pending for the world's champiojiship affair.

'' Fred challenged the winner of the Smhh-Carpentier bout, but he will be side-stepped now since the French fighter has arranged for the go with Beckett. Fulton may go along, taking on others, and finally coming to the place where he will insist on a bout with tho successful one between Beckett and Carpentier, and, being the first one to challenge, will probably be taken on.

"To be regarded as a worthy foe for Dempsey that winner should best Fulton, and then he would have backing any place. There is an idea prevailing that Dempsey despite his eighteen-se-cond knockout of Fulton, should give the Rochester plasterer another chance. The latter is willing to take it. After all, the best way for him to receive recognition will be to best either Beckett or Carpentier."

A later cablegram stated that Beckett had declined a challenge from Fulton, saying he preferred waiting for Carpentier.
