KITCHEN GARDEN COMPETIION.
TARANAK-I DECISIONS,
The Taranaki Agricultural Society hav c arrived at the following decisions relative to the special kitchengarden competition. Prizes from £4 downwards are announced. 1. Area under cultivation to be quarter acre and under within the ] Borough of New Plymouth, merits only, not the bulk of the crops to be considered. 2. No outside labour to be employed for cultivating or planting (Note: Outside labour is permissible for first digging only). 3. Gardens to be judged during the month of November and at such other times as the society may decide. 4. Points to be allocated as follows :• —• Cleanliness and cultivation; system of cropping and general appearance; peas, potatoes, kumaras, winter greens (including savoys and silver beet); broccoli > onions, shallots, parsnips, carrots, beet, long or round —each 10 points. . Broad beans, runner, and dwarf, kidney beans; cabbages .(cooking), cauliflowers, turnips, vegetable marrows and pumpkins—each 8 pointß. Cabbages (red), celery, cucumbers, leeks, rhubarb, kale (any variety), tomatoes, brussels sprouts, lettuceeach 6 points. Artichokes (glob e or tuberous), and spinnach—each 4 points. Herbs (including parsley, mint, sage, etc.), horse radish, radishes, and small salads and anything not enumerated— each 3 points. Note. —The greater the variety of vegetables grown well the grater the number of points recorded, but the minor sorts, as counting the least, should only b e grown in small quantities, the more useful in large bulk, not only because they count more but becaus e they are more serviceable.
