EXPIRING LAWS CONTINUANCE, Tie Expiring Laws Continuance Bill was introduced by Governor's .message. Mr Massey explained that the bill merely proposed to keep alive a number of Acts already passed by the House. • The principal question in the bill was the perpetuation of the Mortgages Extension Act for twelve months. This was most •necessary, otherwise that Act would expire on Sunday. ■After lengthy discussion the Premier agreed to strike out all the provisions of the bill except those dealing with the Mortgages Extension Act. and in this form the bill passed all its stages. '■ TRIBUTES TO DECEASED MEMBERS. The Premier then moved the usual motions expressing Parliament's liigfli sense of appreciation of services to the Dominion and sympathy with re : latives in connection with the dea.th3 of the following former members of the Legislature:—Hon. A. L. D. Fraser, Hon. (Donald Reid, Hon. Thomas Thompson, Mr Ja«kson Palmer, Mr It. iM. Taylor, Mr iS. Buxton, Mr W. J. Speigfhto, Hon. W. H. Tucker, and Hon. Hamilton Gilmer. Many members spoke in sympafhotic terms on the motions, and as a ! mark of l'espect to the memory of j the deceased members the House rose lat 5.50 till 2.30 p.m. on Tuesday.— Press Assn. ' THE IVAN BLACK CASE. A petition by Ivan Black, of Whangarei district, asking for relief in connection with a charge of having stolen a cow and calf, was presented to the House of Representative* by j 'Mr C. H. Poole (Auckland West). Petitioner declared that he toad incurred expenses amounting to nearly £ 500 in connection with the original hearing and appeals, and asked for relief in connection with the matter, declaring' that it was a case of malicious prosecution in the first instance. WIMjNGA'BEI HARBOUR EMPOW- , * ERING BILL. A brisk fire of notices of local and - private members' bills was (kept up while the House of Representatives was sitting on Thursday afternoon. Two local bills were notified by the Hon. W. H. Herries, namely the Tauranga Borough Council Electric Loans Empowering Bill, and the Tauranga Harbour Board Empowering Bill. Notice in regard to the Auckland 'Harbour Board Loan Empowering Bill was given by the Hon. A. M. Myers, while Mr F. Mander (iMarsden) took simflar action in regard to the Whangarei Harbour Board Vesting and Empowering Bill.

The request of Stephen Shalfoon, amri -<-i<?G.Eg , e Shalfoon, of Opotiki, to have "the stigma of being or having been enemies of the British nation or of being o1 enemy origin removed from fheir names'* was presented to the dlouae of Representatives by the liou. \V. D. S. Mac Donald. The petitioners claimed that a<s Christians or I lie '.Maj'oiiite sect, born in the province of Syria, they should not be considered enemy aliens in the real sense oi; the word, even, though, technically so. They also made a genoral petition for a similar removal of disabilities from all Christian people of the province of Lebanon, in i Syria. \ The document detailed that since i 1801 the province of Lebanon had had ■<:t special constitution with a military 'i governor who must be approved by i< Phe Powers. In January, 1915, the Imjt periai Government,, by Order-in-Coun- ' ell, made special provision for the 'exemption from all restrictions imi posed by the British Government on U'lien enemies of any Turkish subject who was a Christian and by race either Greek, Armenian, or Syrian. T!his exemption was re-enacted in 1916. In these circumstances t!he petitioners, who are alien enemies within the meaning of the New Zealand War Regulations, ask for relief, as stated.
