HOMES FOR THE PEOPLE.
HAWERA MOVES
The Mayor has just moved the following resolution before the Hawera Borough Council, and it was unanimously carried:—
"That the Housing Committee consider the question of the Council raising a loan of £5000 to £10,000, providing that arrangements can be made to borrow the.money at an acceptable rate, for the purpose of inaugurating a housing scheme for the borough; the committee also to take into consideration the following facts:—(l) The council own suitable land, no need to buy at £300 to £600 per acre. (2) Council can borrow at much better advantage than a pri- ! vate person. (3) The council would not require to make a profit, all that would be necessary being sufficient to cover interest and sinking fund. (4) The proposed land at present let foi grazing, and when cut up into quarter acres would bring in more revenue in the way of rates and rant, thus bringing in an increased return. (a) That the buildings should be erected in concrete, thus reducing upkeep or maintenance to a minimum. (b) The tenants should be charged just sufficient rent to cover interest and sinking fund, (c) The tenants should have the option of purchasing the improvements, the land to be always the council's and let on Glasgow leases." The Mayor said the whole scheme would hinge on the council being able j to secure the money at a moderate I rate of interest.
