TWO OCEANS LINKED.
THE PANAMA EPOCH.
ISOLATION ABOLISHED,
(Received 12.5 p.m.)
LONDON, Aug. 17.
The "Times," in a leader, says that the passage of 200 ships of the Ame» riean fleet through the Panama Canal in ten hours in order to take up future headquarters at San Francisco, is one of the landmarks of the world's history. It abolishes the old conception of the Pacific's isolation. It is a question whether Britain's ideas are yet adjusted to the new outleolc, Few even realise thait the Pacific throws the life of America and Canada into actual contact. The Far East links their interests wth Australia's and makes the scattered islands most valuable strategically and com mercdally. The British Empire js certain to benefit, especially by -he immense changes resulting from direct communication betw§ e n the Atlantic and the Pacfic. It may be hoped that the Admiralty, aided by Admiral Jellicoe, will soon work out new plans needed in the immediate future.—"Times."
