HIKURANGI RIDING LOAN PROPOSAL.
(To the Editor.)
Sir, —In your issue of 12th inst., a letter appears from Mr W. A. Kerr, in which he questions the accuracy of the report of the meeting held here posal. I don't question Mr Kerr's statement respecting the number of ratepayers who attended both RipQnui and Tanekaha meetings, but should like to explain to all who ara not conversant with the facts that to connect Riponui with the HikurangiJordan road as suggested will not deprive them of a metalled road to Hukerenui railway station, as they can get to that place by the lower road via Craddock's swamp. This road is certainly longer by about two miles than the upper road, but as a set-off against the extra distance js a much easier grade. Mr Kerr omits to state that to carry out the suggestion of the Riponui meeting would necessitate leaving about two mjles of the road between Jordan and that place unmetalled. I consider that to do this would be against the best interests of the whole district, as with the whole of the road metalled it would be possible to substitute, for the present costly method of cartage of cream, etc, an up-to-date motor service. It will probably not make much difference to me which proposal is given effect to, but I intend to support that.which will in my opinion be of most benefit to the district. —: I am, etc., F. ELLIOTT, Tanekaha.
