A COLOSSAL UPHEAVAL.
CALAMITOUS EFFECTS,
MANUFACTURES CURTAILED
(Received 9.10 a.m.)
LONDON, July 22,
The 'Government explains that it is not attempting to use service men as strike-breakers. It took the drastic step of sending five thousand naval stokers to assist in pumping at the mines, with a view to avoiding irreparable damage and preserving the miners' 'livelihood. The real danger now lies in the possibility of the miners misconstruing the Government's object.
The strike is of colossal proportions. There are two hundred thousand strikers in South Yorkshire, forty-five thousand in Monmouthshire, eight thousand at Mansfield (Notts), four thousand at Burnley (Lancashire)* and three thousand in South Staffordshire.
Two Leeds foundries have been closed and many of the largest works have reduced their activities in anticipation of a shortage of coal.—A. and N.Z.
