ATHLETIC PROWESS.

DAN MASON'S ACHIEVEMENTS

VARIOUS RACES DESCRIBED,

One of the latest London newspapers to hand, under date May 29, contains the following account:—

There was some fine running at the V.M.C.A. Sports Carnival at Stamford Bridge last Saturday. - The greatest event of the day was the International Invitation Mile Relay Eace. America and Australia did not start, and the race was a very close thing between the New Zealanders and England, the Dominion team just getting home by a yard in 3m 30 3-ss, beating the record of 3m 31 3-5s set by such men as Mann, Applegarth, D'Arcy, and Nicol in July, 1914. Canada was beaten off by 100 yards. The chief feature of the race was the rivalry between Albert Hill, of the Polytechnic, and D. L. Mason, a New Zealander (of Kamo). They passed and repassed one another in great style. A furlong from home Hill was well in front, but round the last bend Mason made a great effort, and to some spectators appeared to interfere with Hill. They came down the final straight neck and neck, the New Zealander winning with a yard to spare, and the halfmile being run in lm 55 2-ss. Sweet and Wilton ran the next quarter practically dead level, but Wilson (also of the New Zealand team) was sent away with a very slight disadvantage, and Mawley gave him a great race over the first furlong. The last furlong was covered in the same way, Lindsay gaining the result for New Zealand by a yard from W. A. Hill. The New Zealand team was:—D. L. M\ason (880 yds), J. Wilton (440 yds), H. E. Wilson (220 yds), J. Lindsay (220 yds).

At the Molinari A.C. meeting, Mason, from scratch, ran fourth in his heat of 880 yds, but won the final in great style in lm 58 3-ss, with a cross wind blowing. He could have done better if required, as he had the issue in safe keeping half a lap from home, and eased considerably.

At W. and T. Avery's meeting at Birmingham Mason was not in firstrate trim. In the mile handicap, With the limit at 150 yds, he started fairly well, but the half-mile took 2m 9s, and at the three-quarters (3m 275) he was quite out of it.
