HIKURANGI.
Hikurangi received a visit on Tuesday evening from a first-class concert company of Whangarei artists, their mission being in the direction oi supplementing the efforts of the Commercial Travellers' campaign for the Northern hospitals. A good house was assembled and the evening's entertainment has never been surpassed here. The star feature was a splendid troupe of Pierrots who kept the audience in a continual state of merriment and anticipation. The stage had been tastefully decorated by Mrs Swarm who also acted as advance agent for the concert company. Several members of the Red Cross also gave valuable help by providing sweets and buttonholes. The net proceeds amounted to £14. The company expressed themselves as being thoroughly pleased with their visit and hoped to be able to repeat it in the near future. Owing to the unavoidable absence of our musical director, Mrs Alex. MacGregor, Mr A. Dobson played all accompaniments. The Boy Scouts held a social on Thursday evening to bid farewell to Patrol-Leader George Maddren, and Scouts Will, Adam, and Frank Maddren, who with their parents are leaving for Ohakune. As showing the popular esteem in which they are held, a very large number oi young people were present. Dr. East presented each of them with a parting gift and also presented to Mrs Maddren a set of carvers. He expressed the general regret that was felt in losing the Maddren family and trusted that they would be happy and prosperous in their new home. The evening was devoted to games and dancing. A very enjoyable function was brought to a close by the singing of "Auld Lang Syne." The opening of the bowling sea son in Whangarei had been keenly anticipated by our local bowlers. Thursday was a perfect bowling day and two car loads made the trip to Whangarei, where they spent a happy afternoon on the green. At the conclusion of the day's play, Mr E. Swarm, vice-president, thanked the Whangarei Club on behalf of the Hikurangi visitors, for their hospitality, and extended a warm invitation to the opening of the Hikurangi green towards the end of the month.
