DISTRICT NEWS.

(Own correspondent.)

MAUNU,

A very successful social function was held at the residence of Mr and Mrs J. McLean Clarke on the 26th September. The spacious reception rooms and charming surroundings of the well-known fine old "Gloratt" residence pei'fectly enhanced the success of the gathering, which was inaugurated to tender a friendly au revoir, but happily not a final farewell, to Mrs J. N. McCarroll, who is going to reside in the Auckland dis- , trict for one year. Notwithstanding the continued prevalence of much sickness and the absence of others who are health recruiting, over fifty guests gathered in honour of the occasion. The host and hostess with their unfailing tact and genial courtesy did all in their power, which re- . suited in a very happy evening's en- , tertainment. The majority of the guests were interested in progressive ' euchre, Mrs H. B. Sloane winning ' the lady's trophy, Mr J. H. Hayward 'and Mr H. Hawken being a tie for the gentleman's prize, the booby , prize being won by Mr Hawken, senr., During the evening pianoforte selections were ably rendered by Miss Matthews, and later on, after a 1 dainty supper had been partaken of, ■ the company were entertained by the , rendering of several songs by a very ( popular vocalist, Miss Chrissie Ormist ton. Mr Hawken, senr., also gave a song in his well-known style. Mr Hayward, in wishing the guest of the evening au revoir, voiced the esteem of Mrs McCarroll's many friends, who urrtedly look forward to her reLiir., accompanied not only by her' two~"yovng daughters, but with her husbai.'d, Lieut.-Colonel McCarroll. Mrs McCarroll briefly and appreciatively responded. She, too, is hopefully looking forward to happy days. "Auld Lang Syne" heartily sung was : followed by ringing cheers for Mrs McCarroll, her family, and Lieut.Colonel McCarroll.

Cur local boys are still voluntarily leeving to join the ranks, Private Keitli Muldrock having returned to camp after final leave, and more recently Tpr. Phil. Carter. At the same time Mr A. C. Groves (CI) went into camp. With the continued cheering news, hopes are strong that their absence may not be for long and every good wish is extended for their welfare and safe return home.
