HIGH SCHOOL BOARD.

MEETING OF GOVERNORS

Following upon its decision at the August meeting the Whangarei High School Board of Governors met yes- i terday at~7.30 p.m. instead of 10 a.m. as heretofore. There were present: .Messrs Carruth (chair), Harington, Weaver, Thomson, Todd and Rishworth. LEASE RENEWED. ! ; ' Mrs H. Marchand applied for and was granted a renewal of her lease for 12 months over 196 acres of the Board's reserve. ••: A STAFF DIFFICULTY. ' The position of the Board with regard to Mr A. Quinn was discussed. Mr Quinn entered camp for military training and Mr Elliott was appointed i-n his place, but Mr Quinn proved unable to stand the training and was discharged from the military forces. The Board decided that Mr -.Quirin must be taken back to his old position and that Mr Elliott be- given one month's notice of the termination of lis engagement. ... - : ' ' SEPARATE SCHOOL. A, communication was received from the Minister for Education regarding the provision of separate schools for girls and boys; "*'He was of opinion that in view of the high cost of living the provision of a new schsol was not imperative. When the time came action-would be taken, but investigation that the building in occupation would do for i;he' present. .•:■'. Reference was made to- the suggestion by Mr: J. D; McKenzie'/that the Education Board should ' Kajid over Hora Hora building for a girls' high school if the Department would find half the money for a, site and erect a new. primary school. Mr Harington did not approve of Hora Hora for a girls' school. It was right upon;the road and -the grounds were not suitable. If the building was unsuitable for .a public school it was certainly more unsuitable for a girls' school. ■' ' * Mr Rishworth declared that the building was out-of-date. It was no good Mr McKenzie saying it would serve as a girls' high school. Mr Todd endorsed the opinion that the school was no good for their purposes*" and said Mr McKenzie had spoken without the authority of the Board and should be informed of the fact. He moved in this direction. Mr,. Harington seconded and the motion was carried. Mr Rishworth further moved that "he Education Board be informed that the suggestion that Hora Hora be used for a girls' high school did not emanate from the Board, and that the building was unsuitable. Mr Thomson seconded and the motion was carried. GORRIE'S ROAD. The widening of Gorrie's road was again discussed and eventually Mr Todd moved that the committee in existence continue to endeavour to get a 40ft road through to the high school. A clause in the Washing-up Bill and action with the Borough Council were also discussed but nothing definite done. INCREASING SALARIES. The suggested increases in teachers' salaries was left for the finance committee to deal with. ACCOUNTS. Accounts amounting to £268 10s 6d were passed for payment. THE BOARDINGHOUSE. Mr Rishworth raised the question of the Boardinghouse as conducted at present. He thought that a housemaster should be on the premises. There was good accommodation and the institution should be overflowing. The position was unfair to Mrs McGeahan and the boys themselves. The boys did not get the full advantages of a boarding school. There were no games, etc., and the boys only had the matron to look to, who was, perhaps, a little too strict. If they had a boarding master he might alter things and give the boys more interest. He suggested that possibly Mr Gibbon would take up his residence there. The chairman pointed out that Mr and Mrs Quinn were on premises. but at this stage the Bonrd -decide:! to take further discussion in committee.
