The newspapers urge the Allied Governments to prepare for German peace moves following the enemy successes in Italy.
Intrigues are increasing in Vatican circles. The pope is summoning the principal prelates to Rome in the hope of gaining their support for future pacificist overtures. It is reported that Austrian officers have encouraged their men forward by promising that peace will be obtained a. Venice.
Amsterdam advices state that Admiral yon Tirpitz, speaking at Munich, said that the war would decide whether Germany or Britain was to exercise a protectorate over Belgium, and Germany to gain military safety and economic compensation in Belgium. He declared that Germany could hold out longer than her enemies.
