Mr Gibbon says: "The Taglianiento served Italy badly.. ■- When- the Italians were retreating the river was a rushing, torrent,, but when the -enemy.
cavalry the river had .subsided and become a normal rivulet iii a track of sand. The Italian retirement was glorified by a score of fine fights by the rearguards, bringing the pursuers to a standstill again and again. The Bersaglieri, who have been fighting and inarching continuously for a fortnight, put up a great resistance ,at Sacile (40 miles northeast of Venice), where iiouse-to-house fighting occurred. The fact that they "Were now fighting for 7 their own beautiful country fired the Italians with a new and terrible enthusiasm. The troops to whose defection General Cadorna attributed the disaster on the ~ : 2_th October were' then in Austrian' territory. Now they were fighting on Italian soil, yielding by incite*.
The correspondent regrets that he cannot Indicate the location of the line it is intended to defend, nor the consequence of failure there, otherwise the world would realise exactly the -takes for which Italy is fighting. Italy is literally fighting for her life.
Other correspondents believe : that the Italians cannot long hold the Piave line. . The capture of the' imiiortarit town of 'Be.llano'and the rapid enemy progress in the Sugana Valley tend i*. inspire anxiety.
