EAST AFRICAN DEFENCE.
FOE NONPLUSSED.
PALESTINE RETREAT.
IN FULL SWING.
BAD FOR TURKS.
RUSSIAN PHASES.
LATEST REVOLUTION.
DEMOCRATIC TERMS.
Satisfactory procedure is again reported from East Africa, where the Allies hare managed to place the enemy at great disadvantage by cutting communication between his two main forces. The October tally shows that the Germans lost 1152 men, of whom 290 were whites.
Haring declared Itself the supreme power in Russia, the Soviet section will draft peace terms on a democratic basis for presentation to Germany, and in case the conditions are declined hostilities will be re. sumed. Until a definition is reached the soldiers at the front are ex. liorted to retain the trench defences.
Confirmation Is given of Saturday's report that the whole of the Turkish army in Palestine is in full flight, the main forces trending northward and those on the right making for Hebron, which is 40 miles due east of Gaza and only 20 miles south of Jerusalem. A conjunctive drive on the whole of this 40-mile stretch has been set up by the British and Anzac troops, who are harrying the retreating foe. Several intervening places have been occupied, nnd over forty guns of heavy calibre have fallen into the pursuers' possession. .
The critical condition of Italy has necessitated a new form of military control, which Is generally vested in a number of generals constituted as an Allied Board, one of whose first acts Is the substitution of General Diaz (an Italian) for General Cadorna. Drastic action has become imperative seeing that the Italian fighting strength has been reduced enormously by the loss of 2300 guns and a quarter of a million men (in prisoners alone). Meantime the withdrawal has had the beneficial effect of shortening the straggling front of 100 miles to 30 miles, enabling defensive organisation to be carried out with some prospect of success. Rearguards continue to delay the enemy's advance while the troops are taking up their appointed places on a line selected for the presentation of resistance.
