A SPIRITED RESPONSE. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association, (Press Assn.—Reed. 8.35 p.m.) .LONDON, July 18. A wireless German official message says: "There is increased fighting on the Riga front, southward of Dtfnaberg and Smorgan, and strong artil. lerying at Brzezany. We captured the Carpathian heights eastward of Lomnica, repulsed counter-attacks, and forced back the Russians to the Uomnica line. Artillerying is more active in th e Susita Valley and along the Putna and Sereth. A wireless Russian official report mentions intense enemy artillerying in the 'region of Potutory, southward of Brzezany, and near Halicz. "The enemy strongly attacked southward of Novica and occupied the heights. Our counter-attack re-oc-cupied the heights."
