WHANGAREI The system whereby the winner of a Victoria Cross automatically becomes the recipent of an Imperial pension on account of the decoration has long been in vogue. The payment of special allowances in" connection with the award of the Military Cross and the Distinguished Conduct Medal is a later institution. Arrangements have been completed with the Imperial Government for the payment of such granta and allowances in the case of members of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force who have been awarded such decorations. The winner of a Victoria Cross is entitled to a sum of £10 per annum, payable from the date of the act for which tho award was made, with an additional £5 per annum for each bar added to the Cross. In the event of the annuitant being unable to earn a livelihood on account of old age, or infirmity, or any other circumstance beyond his control, the annuity may be increased at the discretion of the Army Council. A soldier who has been awarded the Military Cross or the D.C.M., is' entitled to a gratuity of £20 ; upon promotion to commissioned rank or upon discharge without pension. If . discharged with a-pension he is entitled tn an. additional sixpence per day. By the arrangements completed all such payments are'to be "made by the New Zealand Government and recovered from the Imperial • authorities through the Treasury. Immediately you feel" a cold coming on take "NAZOL" freely for a few days. It is th# quickest %ad safest remedy, ' •
