Northern Advocate Daily With which is incorporated the Northern Mail Daily.

TUESDAY, JULY 3, 1917. LOCAL AND GENERAL.

Registered for transmission through the post as a newspaper.

This morning the s.s. Manaia brought 116 passengers to Onerahi from Auckland. The adjourned meeting of the Marsden Licensing Committee is being held to-day at the Courthouse, Whangarei. An application for a new hotel at Oakleigh is being keenly opposed, and a considerable amount of evidence taken. There are over 70 cases of diphtheria ia the Auckland Hospital, and as the special ward is unequal to the accommodation of the large influx the excess of patients has been distributed in the boys' and scarlet fever, wards and the observation cottage. In order that such cases may be segregated as soon as .possible the Board has decided to immediately add two sun rooms and an operating room to the diphtheria ward. The sudden rush has necessitated the engagement of six additional nurses. "The medical examination of men in the past," said Dr. Thacker at Christchurch, "has simply been mucked through. What I want to suggest is that every member of the Second Divisu>n should have the right to go to his own medical man for a certificate showing what his deficiency is. Then when be goes to the military doctor,he can say, 'Thjjt is my definciency; you can see whether it is right or wrong.' That would do away with men who have been broken down in camp and drummed out. They have not had a square deal."

it will be noted in this issue that the case of an appealing shearer at Bawene was adjourned sine die. Dealing recently with the subject of shearers' appeals generally, the Farmers' Union "Advocate" stated:— "It is, of course, only right that all appeals which were adjourned sine die should be reveiewed before the Second Division is reached, but there are perhaps other good reasons for the appeals ol First Division shearers being reviewed, as early in the ballots shearers were exempted largely on the ground that shearing was an esesntial industry, and that the scarcity of shearer,s would seriously affect the gathering of the wool harvest. Since then, however, it has been noticeable that this scarcity has been a gold mine to some men who would rather stay at home and help to share the pleasure of higher pay than share the privilege of fighting their country's battle. Shearers a class are just as patriotic as any other section of the community, but thcy, also have their percentage of duty dodgers, and as all our military legislation is designed not for the volunteer but for the hangers-back, so the resolution of the sheep owners is not aimed at all shearers, but at the men who can be spared and who prefer not to go." "NO RUBBIXG" Laundry Help and thrifty wives inseparable. 'Free "Thinker" Note Book with every shilling packet. Always in stock.— J. Harrico'i and Sons.
