HIKURANGI.

BOWLING CLUB AFFAIRS,

Ou last Thursday night the annual meeting of the Hikurangi Bawling Club took place in the Town Hall. The meeting, which was well-attended by members, was presided over, until the election of officers took place, by the retiring president, Mr B. Nelson. Mr J. H. Armstrong, who has been acting-secretary since the resignation of Mr A. N. Wallace read the annual report and balance sheet. The latter showed the finances of the club to be in a most satisfactory condition. Following is the report:— '' Cfdhtiemen.—Your committee finds pleasure in presenting to you the third annual report, and in so doing can with confidence compliment its members on the progress of the club during the past season, both in financial affairs and in the progress of the -club generally. The quality of play put forth by members has been exceptionally good enabling this club to more than hold its own against older clubs. For a young club it is most gratifying to view the results in the various matches played for the most valued trophy, the Swarm Cup. Two rinks from the following clubs tested their strength:—Kawakawa, Whangarei, and Maungaturoto, but the honours remained with the club by a godd margin of points. The McGregor Banner was again competed for under the new conditions, and some very interesting and exciting play took place, resulting in the five games being played to find the winner. The final, which was played on this club ? s green, gave this club the honour of

holding the banner for another season and to again inscribe its name upon it.

Championship.—The system of play i i this competition was the best two out of three with sudden death principles. Very keen interest was taken throughout and the class of play was exceptionally good and the final resulted in one of the club's youngest players (H. Pearson) carrying off the honours with E-. Nelson a good runnerup.

-Handicap Singles.—This competition was played in sections, with sealed handicaps. Some of the sections were keenly contested and others but little. The finals again brought the young player to the front, with C. Brown carrying off the honours. Pairs.—This competition was played in one section and was most keenly contested, and during the whole season provided some most interesting play. These games did a great deal to bring the young players to the front. The competition was finally won by A. N. Wallace and P. Shore, with J. Armstrong and F. Kells as runnersup. Club Fours. —Trophies in the shape of four gold medals were presented by E. Nelson and W. R. Dunn for this competition, and after some keen play A. Is T . Wallace, H. Pearson, D. Ball, and A. Olsen proved themselves and carried away the trophies. Tournament. —During the season the club held its final tournament, and although the weather was unfavourable, outside clubs were well represented and a deal of interesting play took place. The finals resulted in a team skipped by Mr Allsopp and one skipped by Mr T.'Millington struggling for the honours, and in which the Whangarei team was successful. The success of this tournament is due to Messrs.- Casey and Smith who donated four gold medals, which enabled the club to add to its funds the amount of £3 7s. Easter Tournament.—The club was represented by two teams in the Whangarei tournament. One team, although defeated, put up a fight, while the other team, consisting of Messrs. Armstrong, C. Kerr, R. Cherrie, and J. Kerr won the tournament. Tournament. —A team also journeyed to Auckland to endeavour to wrest away the honours of the executive fours, and although not successful, put up a very game fight.

Finance.—Members will see by the balance sheet that the financial posi-

tion of the club is sound and that; the Bank overdraft is now standing at

£103 4/, while £he outstanding subs, are £8 8s 6d, leaving a balance of £5 4s. Members will no doubt consider the abnormal conditions we are at present passing through, and in the face of such the balance as shown is very creditable. Tennis. —Your committee has the pleasure of drawing your attention to the valuable services rendered by the ladies during the past season, and no doubt you will consider such services worthy of some consideration, and to that end your committee at the request of the ladies decided to put down three grass tennis courts for an annual rental of £12. At the present time a tennis club has been formed with a very promising membership. War. —During the season the club has had to part with two of its mem-

bers who have given up their all and

answered the call of the Empire. The members are P. Shore and A. Olsen, and the club now wishes these two members of whom we all feel proud a speedy and safe return.

Green. —During the season the services of Mr Hood were secured as caretaker, and to-day the green has a most promising appearance, and a good playing surface awaits the incoming season.

Conclusion. —Before retiring from office your committee takes the pleasure of wishing the club a very succassful season. Before the meeting went on to the business of electing officers it was resolved, on the motion of A. N. Wallace and T. E. Ellis, that the rules of the club be amended so as to make provision for the election of a sole selector for picking teams for outside matches and a match committee for club matches. The following oflicers were then elected. Patron, Mr 1 W. Carter; president, Mr A. M. East; vicepresidents, Messrs W. R. Dunn, E. Swami, and T. Ellis; secretary and treasurer, Mr R. Cherric; committee: Messrs A. N. Wallace, F. Jeffries, J. Rutherford, R. Lomas, F. Millingtou, and G. Coutts; sole selector, Mr Jeffries; match committee, Messrs \. N. Wallace, J. Rutherford and H. Pearson.
