In the House of Commons to-day Mr Asquith introduced a credit vote of £300,000,000. He stated that since the Ist of April loans to the Dominions and the Allies amounted to £2-53,000,. 000. We were exceeding the estimate in that department, but he did not regret these loans, because no part of
the war expenditure was more import-
' /The war continued to cost £3,000,----000 daily. The army expenditure had slightly decreased, but that for munitions had increased. The amount hitherto voted for the war was equivalent to the previous twenty years' expenditure, including the South African War.
The Allies had advanced seven miles on a front of nine miles on the Somme, and all gains had been held. The enemy's losses were of the heaviest. They had practically abandoned the attack oa Verdun. The total Allied captures .on the Somme were 80,474 prisoners, 304 guns, and 1030 machine-guns. Real headway was being made :n Mesopotamia, despite difficulties. The jealth of the troops were good. The Allies' offensive in Salonika had met with considerable success. They were within eight miles of Monastir. The British and Belgians had occupied the whole coastline of East Africa, the complete conquest of which vas only a niK.tt.er of time. This was not a moment for faint hearts or wavering counsels. All the I suffering we had undergone could not I ;o allowed to end with a patched-upj ■;)recarioi*3, dishonouring icomproinise, masquerading under the name of peace. They were not vindictive, but required adequate reparation for the past and security for the future. He paid a warm tribute to General Smuts and the Belgians in German East Africa. • The defeat of the Turks--at El Katia had .gone far to remove the danger of an attack on the Canal, and impaired Turkish prestige in Arabia and Syria. 'Allies reserved Italian and Russian, reinforcements at Salonika with the object of combining operations with i- , " ,, Russians and Roumanian? in th.3 Dobrudja and Transylvania. Th< Macedonian operations not only er, tailed heavy losses on the enemy, bir prevented the latter transferring iroops to the Dobrudja. Referring to Greece, he said tha , even now, if wisely guided and governed, she might take \.p an attitude •which would render her_worthy to in the great and glorious tradition rommitted to her.
