Speaking at a farewell luncheon to the Duke of Devonshire, Lord Curzon said: "We" have not yet come to the •beginning of the end,- but we can say that at least we have reached the ens of the beginning. The enemy is badly shaken, but undefeated; he begins to retire, but i;or. to retreat. Greater and longer efforts are required, and many mere thousands of lives must be sacrificed before we can begin to hope for the only satisfactory peace."
