THE IDEAL AUSTRALIAN.
CRITICISED BY GERMANY,
LONDON, May 6
Th e German Press never loses an opportunity to advertise Mr.Hughes (Premier of Australia). The "Cologne Gazette" publishes part of his Edinburgh speech, headed "Strong Man from Australia." The paper says: "Herr Hughes enjoys a splendid Press reputation in Eng. land, and the tougher English statesmen are invited to take*" a copy of his rough-and-ready, strike-them-dead manner. The great difference is whether, like Herr Hughes, one is plsying the strong man with no further responsibility or whether one is to provide some sort of harmony between words and deeds. 7 Mr Churchill was lacking in deeds, 1 and so was hissed off the stage. Mr Hughes continues as bold as a circus athlete to swing paper-made hun. dred-weights. It i,s a sign of English intellectual decadence that this Australian is hailed as an ideal statesman."
