SMART TRENCH FIGHTING.

COLONIALS BECOME EFFICIENT

(Press Assn.—Reed. 9 a.m.)

LONDON, August 20,

The "Daily Telegraph's" Malta correspondent states that the last batch of wounded from Gallipoli were wounded mostly in the legs from

bombs and grenades during a night attack. Trenches were captured after a mad ten minutes with the bayonet.

The Australians and New Zealanders are cultivating ingenuity in the trenches. At Anzac they have an Inventions Board which considers suggestions for greater efficiency. If Private Smith thinks he can improve a .bomb-throwing device he submits the idea to the Board which experiments and reports. If the device is adopted it is known by the inventor's name, as the Smith Bomb-thrower.
