The Kara Mounted Rifles were visir.ed this week by Major Clark-Walkov who also gave the members instruction. Mr Henry Clarey has been appointed officer in command, and Mr Howard Baker sergeant of the troop. In the report of the annual meeting of the Maungatapere Dairy Coy. yesterday it was stated that Mr .7. Leny moved that the directors be paid 10s per meeting. The informaticn is forthcoming that it was Mr I). Laing who moved the proposition. The Whangarei Botough Council last night granted permission for special lighting effects to be introduced into the tableau to be given in the Town Hall during the patriotic meeting- of August 4. The permission was'granted subject to the Underwriters' Association raising no objection. —It used to be said that the vis : .'.r.\ t: Wh-mgarei received a shock of disappointment on leaving the railway station, owing to the alleged delapidated appearance of that part of the" -own. That impression nowadays must be counter-acted by the appearance of prosperity given by the ■numbev oi motor-cars which await the boat train This morning, besides horse vshieles, seven luxurious looking mofa-cars were marshalled in array aboir the station gates. The pleasure of the audience which attended the orchestral concert lasl night was greatly lessened'by what appears to* be a defect of the stag* properties. Instead of the sound proceeding forth into the hall a large volume appears to be lost in the rooi of the stage itself. In consequence there seems to be a curious sense of separation between the players on the stage and the people in the hall. This gives an impression as if the orchestra were playing to v itself and 1 the audience' listening from a plac e apart. The Whangarei Chamber of Commerce has received a circular from the Department of Agriculture, Industries and Commerce, Wellington 'drawing attention to lists published by the British Board of Trade, of goods which British manufacturers are in a position to supply. The lists apply particularly to goods which have been supplied largely by Germany and Austria. .Members of the Chamber expressed appreciation cf the courtesy and help they had received from H.M. Trade Commissioner in reference to inquiries made regarding British goods. By his help they Had "been placed in touch with sources to which hitherto they had been strangers.
Another "Red Cross tea" was given in Whangarei- yesterday afternoon when a committee of ladies provided refreshments in the Parochial Hall. The function was very well attended, about 120 ladies being present. During the afternoon songs were rendered by Mrs Macgregor and Mrs Elvey. Mrs G. E. Woolley played the accompaniments and she also gave a selection. The guests sat about small tables which were florally decorated in dainty fashion. No one, however, was idle, for the busy click of fast;flying needles continued almost without a b;-eak. Socially the function was a great success, and this was crowned by the gratifying announcement that a sum of about £7 had been realised. The committee, which has every reason to feel pleased at the result was composed of Mesdames Boult (secretary), Hocken, H. Weaver, Drummond, A. Pickmere, Mackie, R. Foote and Holmes.
