HIGH SCHOOL (19) V. ATHLETIC JUNIORS (3).
Unusual interest was centred in the meeting of the High School team and Athletic Juniors at Kensington Park on Saturday. This was because the latter team, to be in the running tor the junior cup, had to beat the High School, who, otherwise would insure that the cup would pass into their hands. The High School from the outset had the better of matters, forwards and backs showing more knowledge of ] the game than was possessed by thai* j opponents. Despite this there was no score in the first half. Then the High School completely outclassed their opponents. The School Dacks handled the ball well frequently, making good use of every opportunity and the first try was the outcome of excellent rearguard work, the smart and accurate. Several times the Athletic forwards headed useful rushes from I the line-outs, but except for a solitary | try they failed to materialise "rem their attacks. Incessant appeals for which there were no grounds marred their play almost throughout the game. After the second try was given to the High School, the Athletics displayed a regrettable spirit by frequently raising "off-side" cries.* In the final stages, the School a?ain crossing the Athletic line by passing of an unusually high order, the same cry of "off-side" was raised by the Athletic team. One or two players, indeed, resorted to hooting. On the sounding of the final whistle, the School players as the victors left the field after cheering in the usual fashion. Their opponents in return began groaning and booing, a course of action which led the chairman of the Rugby Union to administer a sharp caution to the players. The School scorers were in order Gunson, White (try converted), Coburn, Storey (try converted) and J. McLeod. McGregor scored the try for the Athletics.
Mr R. Coleman was the referee.
