DOG TRIALS,

The following- is the ofiicia! report of the performance of rho successful dogs at the North Auckland sheep dog trials, as furnished by the judge, Mr Hunter: — CLASS I—LO.\ T G HEAD AND RING. Thornton's "Sailor" 1, 23 points. Made a fast, clean head in the good time of 2m 225; started rather wild for the ring and barked, then pulled in fairly good time (7m i!s). Steady at ring, but rather poor hold. Completed in 10m 3 6s. R. Miller's "Don" 2, 18 points. Ran slack, rather poor line; then cast well and made a good head, time 2m 4 os. Started a little rough and barked, split sheep and let them badly off line. Made a fair hold in ring:. Finlayscn's "Don" 3, !."> points. Ran free but a little wide; headed well; time lm 295. Started well, but let sheep badly off line. Had trouble getting to ring and failed to hold when there. CLASS 2—SETTLERS' SHORT HEAD, HOLD IN RING, AND HUNTAWAY. J. Evans' "Don" 1. Ran fine, kept a good line, closed in slightly and made a fair head in 6 osecs; pulled in good line with one rather rough turn through ring; time 4m 525; fair drive, fair noise in huntaway, faulty approach, headed several times,, but kept a fair line; failed to complete. G. Child's "Toby" 2. Ran free and wide, but came too close and barked before heading; time lm 01s; let sheep badly off line, then made good work to ring; time 4m r>3s. Made straight to hurdles and through them at first attempt, but dog in bad position; fair drive to flags, man and dog in good position; let badly to right in huntaway, then drove in a good line through flags, but slow to move sheep. At times showed J good approach; failed to complete. i C. G. Wilson's "Moss" 3. Ran free, but crossed head; time lm 11s. Pulled fair line and fairly steady at ring; time 8m 2s. Through hurdles at second attempt; made fair work to flags, but rather poor attempt to huntaway; went off to left, headed and ringed, but failed to complete. CLASS 3—SHORT HEAD AND YARDING. Performance of first dog: Ran free, stopped, and came on line badly, got under sheep, and ran and headed well in an awkward position; time lm 40s. Then split and ran one sheep off, but recovered well and pulled in good line well on sheep and through a difficult piece of ground; time 7m 2Gs. Went off line and past hurdles, but at second attempt drove sheep through hurdles in good style. Yarded well first attempt without delay, and completed in 10m 51s. H. B. Sloane's "Don" 2. Ran free in good line then crossed line, but cast and headed well; time f>m Ss. Made good work to flat but ringed and put on bad work to ring; time 4m 5 sa. Poor work to hurdles; yarded well without trouble or delay. R. Miller's "Don" 3. Indifferent run out, but fair head; time 2m Gs. Fair pull, and went through hurdles at second attempt; slack work at pen, but made a good finish. CLASS 4—HUNTAWAY. J. Evan's "Don" 1, and R. Miller's Don" 2. Both dogs put put in very similar runs. Evans , "Don" had ..better noise and completed in 5m 14b. Miller's "Don" had a better approach and completed in 6m 375. Mr Hunter draws the attention of the competitors in Class 3 to the fact that some of the dogs which put in the best work on th e hill had to be left out on account of bo many points being allowed for yarding.
