HONORARIUM FIXED
INCREASE DEFEATED,
The fixing of the Mayor's honorarium for the next two years by the Whangarei Borough Council on Monday night brought forth an expression of principle. The Mayor left the Chamber while the matter was discussed under the chairmanship of Cr. Harrison. Cr. McLean proposed that the honorarium be £100 per annum. Cr. Harrison said the present honorarium was £50 per annum. Cr. Dent moved that the honorarium be £75 per annum. Cr. Cutforth seconded.
[ Cγ. Pickmere moved an amendment that the honorarium remain the same. He did not think the Mayor of Whangarei was called upon to spend anything in excess of £50 per year. The Mayoral position must be regarded as a purely honorary one. There was no question of payment for the Mayor's services. Cγ. Holmes seconded. Wjhen the Town Hall was opened the extra expenses incurred during the year caused the Council to specially raise the Mayoral honorarium to £75. The pro ppsal to fix the honorar'um this year at £50 was in no way a reduction. The amendment was put, Crs. Holmes, Pickmere and . Harrison voting in favour and Crs. McLean, Dent and Cutforth against. Cr. Harrison said he held the same view on the matter as Gr. Pickmere. He considered £50 a reasonable honorarium.
