THE UREWERA COUNTRY.
SETTLEMENT OBSTACLES ; REMOVED. WELLINGTON, April 20. In the course of an interview on the Urewera country the Minister of Nativo Affairs stated that the last obstacles in the way of settlement had now beeji removed, and "the problem of the Urewere county would soon be solved." With regard to the future of this block 656,000 acres, Mr -Hemes says that a vigorous policy will be pursued *of Crown, purchase, where the native owners are willing to sell. This could not be don© till the question of titles had been settled.' It would nbty in his opinion, be opportune, at present to produce legislation allowing dealings between natives and private. individuals; not; at all events,, until purby the Crqwn are settled.' Every encouragement would be, given to native owners to partition their land, so ,that those who tvish- to farm their lands may get their portions allocated to,them. It is hoped, in a short time that the best of the land will be settled by native owners and settlers holding under the land laws of the Dominion. A pleasing feature is that the natives themselves are an-., xious to have their isolation terming ■ated, that might have been effected years ago "had finality been-insisted on in resrect to litigation.
