RAILWAY RETRENCHMENT,

("Press Assn. —Reed. 9.35 p.m.) SYDNEY, January 21.

As a result of the late drought and the war there is a serious decrease in the railway earnings. To meet this the timetables are being revised and the service reduced, whereby a million train miles will be saved annually. Many temporary hands will be put off. The office branch has contributed 237 men to the expeditionary forces and other branches have sent a considerable number. Their places will not be filled.
