DROWNED IN THE SURF.
QISBORNE, January 22
'Herbert Mac Lean, traveller for J. Griffin and Company, of Nelson, was drowned while surf bathing on the Waikanae' beach yesterday afternoon. Efforts at rescue were unavailing, as Mac Lean was not seen after he first sank. The body lias not been recovered. Another commercial traveller, named iGilchrist, who was bathing with Mac Lean, had a narrow escape, being rescued at the last gasp.
